COVID-19, the outbreak and world pandemic

Symptoms:

  • COVID-19 Common symptoms are Fever, Difficulty in Breathing, Cough, Running Nose, Sore Throat. Etc.

Mode of Transmission:

  • Droplets
  • Sneezing
  • Touching Contaminated area/Surfaces
  • Acc. To some research Articles, it is also transmitted through air.

What to do to prevent yourself from infection:

    • Practice frequent hand washing. Wash hands with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand rub. Wash hands even if they are visibly clean.
    • Cover your nose and mouth with handkerchiefs/tissue while coughing and sneezing. 
    • Wear Mask to cover the mouth and nose.
    • Avoid participating in a large gathering.
    • Try to do work from home.
    • Maintain Social Distancing during travelling and going outside.
    • Regular exercise and yoga during morning hours.

Here are the basics of how to wash your hand properly:

  • Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
  • Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
  • Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
  • Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
  • Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

Steps to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 if you are sick

  • Stay home.
  • Take care of yourself.
  • Stay in touch with your doctor.
  • Avoid public transportation.
  • As much as possible, stay in a specific room and away from other people and pets in your home.
  • Tell your close contacts that they may have been exposed to COVID-19. An infected person can spread COVID-19 starting 48 hours (or 2 days).
  • Follow care instructions from your healthcare provider and local health department. When to seek emergency medical attention.

How to maintain stress if you are infected from COVID-19

  • Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including those on social media. It is good to be informed, but hearing about the pandemic constantly can be upsetting. Consider limiting news to just a couple times a day and disconnecting from phone, tv, and computer screens for a while.
  • Take care of your body.
    • Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate.
    • Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals.
    • Exercise regularly.
    • Get plenty of sleep.
    • Avoid excessive alcohol, tobacco, and substance use.
    • Continue with routine preventive measures (such as vaccinations, cancer screenings, etc.) as recommended by your healthcare provider.
    • Get vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine when available.
  • Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities you enjoy.
  • Connect with others. Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling.
  • Connect with your community- or faith-based organizations. While social distancing measures are in place, try connecting online, through social media, or by phone or mail

Recovery Plans if you are infected from COVID-19

  • The first thing you need to eat right after you get up in the morning is soaked almonds and raisins. During breakfast, eat Poha with peanuts. An hour before your lunch, you should have lemon water. Your lunch should include Dal, rice, and some green leafy vegetables. After 2 hours of having lunch, you can have a handful of peanuts. You should have dinner on time (between 8 and 9 pm) and then drink a glass of warm milk with turmeric.

Quarantine Day 3 And 4

  • Meal 1 – Date and walnuts
  • Meal 2 – Idli Sambhar
  • Meal 3 – Rasam with pepper
  • Meal 4 – AjwainNamak Paratha with Dahi
  • Meal 5 – Cashews with jaggery
  • Meal 6 – Khichdi
  • Bedtime drink – Turmeric milk

Quarantine Day 5 and 6

  • Meal 1 – Unsalted pistas and Khareek with ghee
  • Meal 2 – Ragi dosa or plain dosa
  • Meal 3- Dry coconut and jaggery with 1-2 Dhaniya seeds
  • Meal 4 – Rajma rice
  • Meal 5 – Mathri
  • Meal 6 – Roti with green vegetables
  • Bedtime drink – Turmeric milk

Quarantine Day 7

  • Meal 1 – Cashew and soaked raisins
  • Meal 2 – Upma
  • Meal 3 – Lemon water
  • Meal 4 – Sabudana Wada and Chutney or Sabudana Khichdi with curd
  • Meal 5 – Ghee and salt roasted kurmura
  • Meal 6 – Jeera rice and sprouts cooked with little Tadka
  • Bedtime drink – Ragi malt or Kadha
You can repeat the same chart for the next 7 days.

Ayurvedic Kadas’ and Natural Immunity Boosters

Ministry of AYUSH recommends the following self-care guidelines for preventive health measures and boosting immunity with special reference to respiratory health. These are supported by Ayurvedic literature and scientific publications. Recommended Measures

I General Measures

1. Drink warm water throughout the day.

2. Daily practice of Yoga Sana, Pranayama and meditation for at least 30 minutes as advised by Ministry of AYUSH (#YOGAatHome #StayHome #StaySafe)

3. Spices like Haldi (Turmeric), Jeera (Cumin), Dhaniya (Coriander) and Lahsun (Garlic) are recommended in cooking.

II Ayurvedic Immunity Promoting Measures

1. Take Chyavanprash 10gm (1tsf) in the morning. Diabetics should take sugar free Chyavanprash.

2. Drink herbal tea / decoction (Kadha) made from Tulsi (Basil), Dalchini (Cinnamon), Kalimirch (Black pepper), Shunthi (Dry Ginger) and Munakka (Raisin) - once or twice a day. Add jaggery (natural sugar) and / or fresh lemon juice to your taste, if needed.

3. Golden Milk- Half tea spoon Haldi (turmeric) powder in 150 ml hot milk - once or twice a day.

 III Simple Ayurvedic Procedures

 1. Nasal application - Apply sesame oil / coconut oil or Ghee in both the nostrils (PratimarshNasya) in morning and evening.

2. Oil pulling therapy- Take 1 table spoon sesame or coconut oil in mouth. Do not drink, Swish in the mouth for 2 to 3 minutes and spit it off followed by warm water rinse. This can be done once or twice a day.

IV During dry cough / sore throat

1. Steam inhalation with fresh Pudina (Mint) leaves or Ajwain (Caraway seeds) can be practiced once in a day.

2. Lavang (Clove) powder mixed with natural sugar / honey can be taken 2-3 times a day in case of cough or throat irritation.

3. These measures generally treat normal dry cough and sore throat. However, it is best to consult doctors if these symptoms persist.

Medication and Immunity Boosters:

Please check with your doctor for following medicines as immunity booster and antibiotics

  • Vitamin D3 60K weekly dose (Immunity Booster)
  • Vitamin-C 500 mg twice a day (Immunity Booster)
  • Zinc Acetate 50 mg tab once a day (Immunity Booster)
  • Paracetamol. Don't hesitate to add Nimesulide/Mefenamic acid in case of high fever and body ache (only if fever cross 100-degree F)
  • Ivermectin/ Favipiravir may/may not help (doubtful weak antivirals).
  • Azithromycin and Doxycycline are used to counter secondary infection or undiagnosed sore throat.
  • Cetirizine/Allegra/Lorfast/cough syrups may help.
  • Your doctor may add more medicines (bloodthinner/ steroid), if other parameters require so.

PostCOVID Management

  • Take balanced nutritious diet
  • Have adequate sleep and rest
  • Have a physical exercise- increase it gradually
  • Avoid smoking and consumption of alcohol
  • Take regular medications as advised
  • Self-health monitoring at home - temperature,blood pressure, blood sugar (especially, if diabetic), pulse oximetry etc.
  • For persistent dry cough / sore throat, do saline gargles and take steam inhalation.
  • Get ECG, LFT, KFT, CBC, CRP etc as per doctor’sadvice for monitoring health parameters
