An Unprecedented High Quality Innovation in Crystal Growth
Nearly perfect crystals are in great demand in technological applications as well as in high quality basic research. In the ‘Engineering Kitchen’ of KRMU, a facility for melt growth of large-size crystals has been established by using unprecedented techniques like a furnace fabricated with clay used in pottery and achieving ~1000C, and a pulling mechanism, without employing any electrical motor.
A nucleus of the engineering kitchen to serve as a hub for all students and faculty, particularly those involved in the innovation, invention and entrepreneurial activities has been established at KRM University. Its ambitious projects include preparation of single crystals of technologically important materials. Experiments on solution growth have already been performed by new innovative techniques. A crystal growth system from melt is being designed. For this a new innovative low cost technique for fabrication of thermocouples has been demonstrated. Perfect looking whisker crystals of KCl have been grown by a novel technique. As an offshoot, facilities for recording spectra of constituent atoms of materials and impurities are planned to be established.
