Manual Threshing of Rabi Crops

School of Agricultural Sciences organized manual threshing of rabi crops activity on 30th March 2022. Threshing is basically the process of loosening the edible part of the grain (or another crop) from the straw to which it is attached. It is the step in grain preparation after harvesting.

Students learned about how manual threshing is done using sticks and beating the harvested crops to separate the grain from the straw. One of the simplest methods for threshing crops is to strike the crop spread over the threshing floor with a stick. The threshing floors on which the sheaves are spread must have a hard, clean surface.

Cereal losses emerge at threshing due to grain spillage, incomplete separation of the grain from the chaff, and grain breakage due to excessive striking. Delays in threshing after harvest can also cause losses in quality and quantity of grain since moisture accumulation can encourage mold growth and other losses. Therefore, threshing of rabi crops is an important skill separating the grain from the rest of the plant. This activity was conducted to provide knowledge to students about the techniques of manual threshing of rabi crops.
