National Press Day

Every year on November 16th, National Press Day is observed to acknowledge and honour the Press Council of India, a statutory and quasi-judicial institution. The day marks the anniversary of the presence of a free and responsible press in India.
Media is considered the fourth pillar of democracy and it is said that journalists are a mirror of society, reporting the truth even when under unfavorable situations. This day symbolizes freedom of press and the press's commitments to society.
On this date, the Press Council of India was established. The First Press Commission of India, founded in 1956, envisioned an advisory board to preserve journalism ethics and press freedom in India. It lead to the formation of a Press Council ten years later.
