The programme aims to train students to pursue an open-ended yet rigorous and scientific enquiry into fundamental questions that concern the historical imagination. Students will be taught to enquire the interconnections between time, memory and history in Indian and broader Asian and non-Asian cultural, historical and philosophical contexts while seeking to encompass all questions critical to human understanding. These questions include how humans make or made sense of the past, how historical understanding of the past can transform the present and the future, and the various ways in which the present is constituted or constructed by the past. Historical Studies is envisaged as a critical multi-disciplinary degree designed to profoundly engage students with a new understanding of historical processes across time and space and how these impacts the contemporary situations both in India and in the global context.
