  • I have always portrayed 2 essential concerns in my work:
  • Regard for context in any urban or architectural intervention.
  • The future of cultural heritage in the face of exponential urbanization and growth.
  • I am motivated to take these concerns further in research and academics. As I understand, an architectural intervention is much more than just a programme, space and function related activity and must be preceded by a thorough understanding of morphological and ideological context. It is this understanding and clarity that I wish to share with the present generation of Architecture student.
  • I look forward to learning and contributing to the field of learning.

Prof Hemani Singh has lived, worked and studied in different parts of the world. She has been in Dubai, Singapore and Netherlands for almost two decades and has been involved in professional and academic work. After graduating from School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), New Delhi in 1994, she worked for several years with architectural firms in India and the Middle East. She worked on projects of diverse scales and contexts ranging from conservation, urban design, interior design and architecture. In Netherlands she completed her Master’s programme at Technische Universiteit, Eindhoven and continued with academic research in Singapore. She moved back to India in 2013 and has been actively involved in teaching and academic work. She has been working extensively in introducing innovation in teaching pedagogy, didactics, curricular development, interdisciplinary learning as well as collaboration between industry, academic programmes and universities.

  • Master of Science (M.Sc) in Architecture, Building and Planning at Technische Universiteit, Eindhoven (TU/e), The Netherlands (2008 – 2010). Thesis in MSc (Architecture, Building and Planning), ‘Recovering Delhi’s Red Fort’ was chosen to be published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing, Saarbrucken, Germany.
  • Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch.) from School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, India (1989 – 1994). Graduation thesis was shortlisted for Gold Medal and was documented for future reference by the department of architecture at School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi.
  • Worked extensively in India, Dubai and The Netherlands. (1996-2019)
  • Professional Work Experience in India (KT Ravindran, Architects and Urban Designers, New Delhi)(Jan1994 – Aug1995): Worked on a wide range of projects, from residential, to urban, landscape and conservation (including research and documentation) related projects. Some of the projects are: Landscape and site layout of Rajiv Gandhi memorial at Sriperumbudur, documentation and conservation of Vice Regal Lodge at Simla, workshop drawings of Chinmaya Mission Center at Lodhi Road, New Delhi..
  • Professional Work Experience in Dubai (DUBARCH, Architects and Interior Designers, Dubai) (Aug1996 – May2002): Worked on various projects of different scales and at different stages, from conceptualization to execution at the site. Also worked in close coordination with structural designers, electro-mechanical engineers and site engineers to develop design concepts into working drawings and site execution drawings and documents. To highlight a few, worked on design and conceptual stage for housing estates (villa compounds) and competitions for Emirates Resorts, Dubai. Also developed initial sketches by Carlos Ott into working drawings and site execution documents for Al Ghurair villa at Khawaneej.
  • Research work at TU/e, The Netherlands.Worked with Prof. Dr. Ir. Pieter van Wesemael (Professor of Urbanism and Urban Architecture, Department of the Built Environment, Technical University, Eindhoven) on a research proposal titled, ‘Everyday Culture of a Living Historical Quarter: Dwellings of Old Delhi, Developed and Redeveloped by Everyday People’. The proposal was to culminate in a research thesis under the chair of Urban Cultures. It is an endeavor to study the dwelling as a realm of interaction between the present living culture and past morphology in the context of Old Delhi. It addresses the significance of continuity of everyday culture in a living historical quarter by focusing on dwellings that have been developed and redeveloped by everyday people.Worked with Dr.A.S Bhalla on the research and illustrations for the book titled, Royal Tombs of India, 13th to 18th century; Mapin Publishing, Ahmedabad, India; 2009.
