A Ph.D. in Journalism and Mass Communication from School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) is an academic degree earned by students who have completed a prescribed course of study in this field. The program usually takes about four to six years to complete, depending on the student's previous education and professional background. A thesis or dissertation is often required for completion of the program, though many schools do not require one for graduation.
 
This course at K.R. Mangalam University is a terminal degree that trains students to become educators and researchers, while also laying a solid foundation for success in journalism careers. Students who earn their degrees from the Department of Journalism and Media Innovation are prepared to advance into leadership positions in media organizations, academia, government agencies, nonprofit organizations and consulting firms.
 
The Ph.D. programme caters to the following categories of students:
 

Full-Time Scholars

Scholars are required to devote full time in the campus for the Ph.D. programme. Some scholars may be offered a teaching/research/project assistantship. The selected scholars will be required to assist in teaching/laboratories and other developmental work under the guidance of a mentor.

Part-Time Scholars

Scholars working in organizations situated in close vicinity of the university can enroll under this category.

Sponsored Scholars

Employees of organizations/industries having collaborations with the university can enroll under this category.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The candidate should have postgraduate degree or its equivalent from a recognized University, in respective discipline, with minimum 55% marks or minimum CGPA of 5.5 on a 10 point scale.
  • They are required to supply a brief statement of research interests (maximum 1 page) Research experience like project work or internships at the undergraduate or master’s-level should be highlighted. Candidates who have qualified CSIR-NET or GATE examination will be preferred.

Admission process

Candidates are required to download the Ph.D. admission form from the university website https://www.krmangalam.edu.in/admission/phd-admission and submit it completely filled in all respects with copies of all the documents. Shortlisted candidates will be called for written examination and interview. They will be required to pay a Registration-cum-Processing fee of 5000/- (Non Refundable).

Admission to Ph. D. Programme will be based on the overall performance in Post Graduate degree, Entrance Examination, Personal Interview and facilities available. Preference will be given to CSIR/UGC NET qualified candidates and those having sponsored projects.

Written Entrance Examination

It will broadly test the research aptitude and ability to comprehend. Candidates with NET, GATE, M Phil. or equivalent qualification may be exempted from entrance examination.

Personal Interview

Candidates who clear the written entrance examination will be selected for personal interview. The interview will be conducted by the Interview Board of the University to comprehensively judge in depth knowledge in the concerned subject/area and ability to do research.

Admitted candidates will be required to pay the first instalment of the Ph.D. programme fee and security deposit within the specified time to confirm the admission.

Programme Details

Programme Highlights
  • The Ph.D. Programme is based on the research carried out by the student under the guidance of the Supervisor/Co-supervisor(s) and the programme duration is dependent upon the completion of the chosen research by the student. 
  • The research work is characterized either by the discovery of new facts or the proposition of a new theory/theories or by a fresh interpretation of known facts.
  •  It should bear evidence of the candidate’s capacity for analysis and judgment as well as his/her ability to carry out independent investigation, design or development.
  •  All admitted students are provisionally registered into the Programme and are required to do a mandatory minimum course work of 14 credits. 
  • Upon successful completion of the course work, the student shall identify Supervisor /Co-supervisor(s) and in consultation prepare a detailed Research Proposal/Synopsis of the research that he/she wants to carry out. 
  • After the approval of the Synopsis and Supervisor /Co-supervisor(s), students are formally registered in to Ph.D. Programme. This must normally be done within one year of admission. 
  • After formal registration, the student proceeds with research and is required to submit his/her progress report at the end of every semester and make a presentation before School Research Committee (SRC). 
  • The minimum period after which a student can submit the thesis is three years from the date of admission and the maximum period allowed is 6 years.
  • Upon completion of the research work, the student has to submit a pre-dissertation presentation of the research work before School Research Committee (SRC).
  • Before submitting the thesis, the student should have fulfilled all the necessary conditions laid for submission of a thesis as mentioned in Ph.D. regulations. 
  • The thesis must be a piece of original work free from any plagiarism, is subject to evaluation by examiners. 
  • On having the Thesis assessment report and recommendations from all examiners, the scholar has to appear for the final viva voce for the award of the degree.
