The PhD in Fine Art / Visual Art at the School of Architecture and Design (SOAD), K.R. Mangalam University, follows a research-led approach that connects artistic practice with critical, historical, and cultural inquiry. The programme enables in-depth exploration of domains such as Art History, Visual Culture, Cultural Studies, Folk and Traditional Art, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Applied and Advertising Art, and Museum and Heritage Studies, as well as related interdisciplinary areas.
The programme prepares scholars for rewarding careers in academia, research institutions, museums, cultural organisations, and the creative industries. It is guided by highly qualified and experienced faculty members who are recognised in their respective fields. Research is carried out under the mentorship of a Supervisor and, where applicable, Co-Supervisor(s), ensuring strong academic and research support throughout the programme.
Applicants should possess a Master’s degree (MFA/MVA or equivalent) in Fine Arts or an allied discipline from a UGC-recognized University, with at least 55% marks or a CGPA of 5.5 on a 10-point scale, subject to UGC and University norms.
Scholars enrolled in the Ph.D. programme in Fine Arts are required to pursue their research on a full-time basis and remain actively engaged on campus. They will be encouraged to secure research project funding aligned with their own topics, organise seminars and conferences, and publish in Scopus or Web of Science indexed journals. Alongside this, they will support teaching, studio practice, exhibitions, and other departmental initiatives under the guidance of a designated mentor.
Employees of art institutions, cultural organisations, or design industries collaborating with the university can enrol under this category. They will pursue research relevant to their sponsoring organisation, present at seminars and conferences, and publish in Scopus or Web of Science indexed journals, strengthening the link between the university and the creative industry.
Practising artists, art educators, or professionals working in organisations situated in close vicinity of the university can enrol under this category. They will pursue research alongside their professional practice, participate in seminars and conferences, and contribute research papers and exhibitions to the department’s academic development.
Lecturers/Professors/Academicians mentor students thoroughly, helping them advance their artistic knowledge and essential studio skills. A Ph.D. is a recognised qualification for teaching in universities and art colleges.
Art Researchers and Art Historians study visual culture, art movements, and heritage through rigorous research. They work in universities, museums, research institutes, and cultural organisations.
Curators plan exhibitions, manage collections, and connect artists with audiences. They shape how art is displayed, interpreted, and preserved in museums and galleries.
Professional Artists build careers through exhibitions, commissions, and residencies. A Ph.D. strengthens their research depth and conceptual practice, supporting a credible place in the contemporary art world.
Scholars with strong publications and studio practice may pursue collaborations, fellowships, residencies, and academic opportunities in Europe, America, and Australia, based on merit and the quality of their work.

A PhD in Fine Arts strengthens your profile for roles in teaching, research, curation, and independent creative practice. The degree supports academic and research positions in India and abroad, although outcomes depend on your publications, studio practice, and professional experience. Combining scholarly inquiry with artistic expertise gives you a distinctive and credible position in a competitive field.
The programme builds your ability to articulate artistic and theoretical ideas with clarity and rigour. Through seminars, conferences, exhibitions, and peer-reviewed publication, you will engage with fellow scholars, faculty, artists, and curators from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. These experiences develop academic writing, critical presentation, and collaborative skills, enabling you to communicate your research effectively to both scholarly and public audiences.
Doctoral research in Fine Arts encourages engagement with scholars, artists, and institutions across South Asia, Southeast Asia, and beyond. As part of a diverse international scholar community, you can build academic and professional networks through conferences, exhibitions, and collaborative projects. These connections foster cross-cultural understanding and open possibilities for comparative research and regional collaboration, though their extent depends on your own initiative and the quality of your work.

The Ph.D. in Fine Arts programme is based on research conducted by the scholar under the supervision of the Supervisor/Co-supervisor(s), and the duration of the programme is determined by the scholar’s completion of the chosen research.
The research work is distinguished by the discovery of new knowledge, the formulation of new theoretical frameworks, or a fresh interpretation of known artistic practices and traditions. It should demonstrate the candidate’s analytical and critical abilities, as well as his or her ability to conduct independent and original scholarly research.
All admitted scholars are provisionally registered in the programme and must complete a minimum of 14 credits of course work.
Ph.D. Admission Process
Candidates are required to download the Ph.D. admission form from the university website and submit it completely filled in all respects with copies of all the documents. Shortlisted candidates will be called for written examination and interview. They will be required to pay a Registration-cum-Processing fee of INR 5000 (Refundable).
Admission to the Ph.D. in Fine Arts programme will be based on the overall performance in the Post Graduate degree, Entrance Examination, Personal Interview, and positions available. Preference will be given to UGC NET/JRF qualified candidates and those having funded research projects or a sponsoring organisation.
Selection Process
It will thoroughly evaluate your ability to conduct research, comprehend complex concepts, and apply critical and analytical thinking in the field of Fine Arts. Candidates with UGC NET/JRF, M.Phil. or equivalent qualifications may be exempted from the entrance examination.
Candidates who clear the written entrance examination will be selected for the personal interview. The interview will be conducted by the Interview Board of the University to comprehensively judge in-depth knowledge of the concerned subject/area and the ability to do research.
Admitted candidates will be required to pay the first installment of the Ph.D. programme fee and security deposit within the specified time to confirm admission.

Artists, art educators, and art history graduates who wish to build a career rooted in scholarly research and creative inquiry should consider this programme. Upon completion, they will be well placed for teaching, research, curation, and independent practice, with opportunities to work in academic institutions, museums, galleries, and cultural organisations in India and abroad.
This programme is also well-suited for individuals who are lifelong learners and are eager to strengthen their critical thinking and research abilities. Artists are the interpreters of culture in the modern world, and this programme is ideal for those who are passionate about ideas, heritage, and contributing original knowledge to the field of art.
