After finishing school, the most important question that brings an individual in a state of confusion is “what to do next?” In the recent times, many new career opportunities have sprung up, which are though a bit diverted from the conventional career options, but have very good prospects and are backed with lucrative pay packages. One of these options that is gaining a lot of popularity lately is journalism. Although people are under the notion that it is a risky career choice and takes a lot of time for establishment, this doesn’t hold true! There are successful journalists who have got fame at a very early age and have strongly established themselves as a known figure in the world of media in a very little frame of time.

In this article below, we will explore the growth potential that the field of journalism offers to its pursuers and what are the diverse career prospects in the same.

What is Journalism All About?

In the contemporary era of globalization, there is something or the other that is happening in every nook and corner of the world. The main job of a journalist is to gather the relevant information regarding a particular happening and give the rest of the world proper information and knowledge of the same.

There are people who are under the notion that journalism is all about writing, which is also partially yes, but still, there is a lot more to this profession. The fact is that if you do not have good command over the language and proper skills to express the same, attaining success as a journalist would be a really difficult task for you.

What are the prospects of being a journalist in India?

It is an undeniable fact that today, journalists and media professionals play a very important role in the growth and development of a nation. It is the journalists who take up the important responsibility of informing, educating, and spreading awareness among the common masses of the country. Owing to the spreading wings of the domain of journalism in the country, there is a growing requirement of skilled and well-educated professionals in the field. Candidates who pursue journalism education have a very wide range of career opportunities in front of them. Let’s have a look into some of these:

Reporter: As a reporter of any mass communication media such as a news channel on radio or television, one needs to report an incident with proper controlled tempo and clarity of language. The person should have good speaking skills along with proper voice modulation skills.

Feature writer: As a feature writer, you will be supposed to write feature stories on given topics.

Editor: An editor ensures the continuity and uniformity in the print media. It is the editor who presents the written news in an attractive and eye-grabbing manner.

Columnist: Being a columnist is all about writing articles on the area of news which a person specializes in. A columnist gets the opportunities to write in specific columns of a newspaper or magazine such as fashion, sports, entertainment, fashion, etc.

Proof Reader: It is not possible that each and every news that is going to be presented has all the correct information. But putting up wrong information can be very risky. Incorrect information can in no way be conveyed to the masses and it may also disrupt the peace and stability of the country. In order to ensure that all the information included is written correctly and is in proper diplomatic language, the proof-reader cross checks and double checks a content, making it fit to be presented further.

Critic: The job of a critic is to critically and impartially observe any news and express opinion on the same. It helps give the readers and followers a proper direction to be followed. However, one can become a critic only after having proper experience and relevant information about the content. Thus, being a critic is a well-read job that requires experience as well as expertise.

Correspondent or Special Reporter: A special reporter is more like a columnist but the duty is on field. One needs to have a thorough and proper knowledge of the areas in which he or she specializes in, such as politics, sports, and others. A correspondent has to explain the news in a way he or she understands it but in a comprehensive manner.

One thing that is clearly evident is that the scope of journalism pursuers in India is multifaceted. With the area of mass media been expanding day by day, the country is indeed in need of more journalism professionals to keep up with the pace and rising demand.
