Local Tourism refers to exploring your own country’s territory. It is Local and community-based tourism where visitors immerse themselves in the culture, heritage, and natural resources of local communities.  Tourism is the act and process of spending some time away from your home for relaxation, pleasure or to get a break from your daily life.

A deeper insight into Local Tourism

According to WTTC, in terms of travel and tourism’s overall GDP contribution in 2019, India came in at number ten out of 185 nations. Travel and tourism contributed Rs. 13,68,100 crore (US$ 194.30 billion), or 6.8% of the GDP in 2019. International visitor numbers are projected to exceed 30.5 billion by 2028, bringing in about US$ 59 billion in revenue. After the epidemic, local tourists are anticipated to propel growth. Local tourism is a tourist- and community-focused strategy that uses tourism as a means of delivering long-term, sustainable community infrastructure. At the same time as supporting the community, it provides visitors with a genuine taste of local customs and culture. Nowadays, the typical traveler from around the world is more interested in stories and experiences than in taking a point-and-shoot tour.

The local-based impact tourism model can boost tourism by $25 billion by bringing 15 million extra tourists to villages alone, creating 100,000 village-level entrepreneurs in the process. If done correctly, this approach could exponentially increase the number of tourists visiting India, while at the same time incentivizing the local community.

India, the nation with the world’s fastest-growing economy, is a vital market for global hospitality brands and industry professionals. People are now considering less-traveled-to and undiscovered locations that naturally offer social separation. The Ministry of Tourism (MoT) and its field offices have taken a significant step by arranging and sponsoring various tourism promotion events under the “Dekho Apna Desh” (see my country) Campaign, which highlights the nation’s local tourism assets and products to raise awareness among stakeholders and the general public (Travel Trends Today, 2021). The tourism and hospitality industry has enormous potential, contributes significantly to economic growth, and accounts for 4.6% of the GDP of our nation.

Growth of Local Tourism

The growth in local tourism will boost multi-dimensional expansion in many sectors;

Services

Businesses are driven to expand their service offerings by a surge in tourists. Companies in business enhance their current offers while exploring new ones to attract visitors from beyond the area. Tourism promotes year-round improvements that benefit locals, from dining alternatives to entertainment venues, museums, transit services, healthcare facilities, and more.

Employment

Employment opportunities arise in a thriving tourism town with new enterprises and service offerings. Locals can fill these new positions as new firms emerge and existing ones discover ways to grow. There are always job opportunities, particularly in the hospitality, food service, and tourism industries. There are also new prospects for entrepreneurship. Thanks to services like Airbnb, locals can now charge visitors who are looking for a comfortable, local place to stay.

Infrastructure

Enhanced tourism can encourage local governments to improve the community’s infrastructure: accessible public transit and well-maintained roads allow visitors to take in more of the area. Travelers may now tell friends and family about their experiences thanks to advancements in telecommunication. More efficient sewage and water systems can meet the growing demand while guaranteeing a comfortable stay.  Everyday citizens, regardless of income level, benefit from these advancements.

Income

Businesses in the community receive revenue from visitors. When tourists visit their neighborhood, businesses of all kinds, including restaurants, shops, and boutiques, stand to gain more revenue. Consequently, this will increase the amount of money that employees and business owners may spend in the local economy. The community’s major environmental and infrastructure projects will be financed by the increased sales tax revenue.

Culture

A community’s culture can be preserved and developed through tourism. Locals get to embrace their heritage as visitors enthusiastically immerse themselves in the town’s rich history and customs. Local artists can share their stories and tell new ones, and local historical buildings and museums may enjoy an increase in visitors.
In the meanwhile, visitors infuse the communities they visit with their viewpoints and customs. The tourism-related cross-cultural interactions can benefit the community in the long run.

Conclusion

To develop tourism, local community participation is essential. Local food, local culture and festivals are add-on products to tourism, and it also provide authentic experiences to tourists. Indigenous knowledge of the local community helps in the conservation of the environment and local culture.
