Is CAT Exam Tough? Complete Difficulty Analysis & Study Plan
Every year, lakhs of students dream of getting into top B-schools like IIMs. But one question always pops up, i.e., “Is CAT exam tough?”. The most prominent MBA admission entrance test in India, the Common Admission Test (CAT), enables applicants to get admission to elite management schools. It is without a doubt the largest MBA admission exam in the nation. It is administered by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) on a rotation basis each year.
When we say ‘tough’, it does not mean ‘near impossible’. With the right strategy, consistency, and smart preparation, even an average student can clear it.
This guide will help in understanding why is CAT exam tough. It will also break down the CAT exam difficulty level, success rate, and whether it is easy or tough for different students, along with tips on how to crack it.
Why is CAT Exam Tough?
Now, you may be asking yourself, “Why is the CAT exam tough?” since a score of 92 or 100 out of 198, isn’t “very high”. The CAT is regarded as India’s most challenging management entrance test for several reasons, which include:
Complexity of the Syllabus
The IIMs, which administer the CAT exam, have not established a set curriculum or format for the test. This causes a great deal of uncertainty among candidates. As a result, the syllabus’s breadth becomes extremely broad and comprehensive, making the test more unpredictable. Any aspirant is further perplexed by the absence of a predetermined, fixed plan. Additionally, there is no set format; instead, the curriculum and format must be deduced from previous years’ exam questions, which causes worry and mistrust in one’s own preparation. As recently as 2020, the structure was altered, resulting in a decrease in the time from three to two hours and a reduction in the number of questions from 100 to 66.
Time Limitations
Many of the challenging and time-consuming questions on the CAT exam seem simple at first, but as you start solving them, you’ll see that they take a fair amount of time. For this reason, it is advised to practise consistently for each of the three exam portions. It takes only forty minutes to finish each segment, which consists of at least twenty and up to twenty-four questions. There is hardly any time to think much. As a result, it is challenging to try the exam with little preparation.
Nature of Competition
In India, the CAT is the most challenging management test. For a few thousand spots at prestigious colleges, more than 2.5 lakh applicants take it every year. Comparative advantage is the basis for the selection process, which makes it challenging to overcome.

CAT Exam Difficulty Level: Section-wise
Let’s break down the real difficulty level of understanding how tough the CAT exam is:
Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR)
The shortest but most challenging questions to solve are found in the DILR section. A fair effort at the CAT Exam necessitates extensive practice due to its extensive syllabus. The secret to keeping these difficult but manageable questions fresh in your mind is to practise this part frequently. The most crucial thing to keep in mind is to maximise and manage your time when answering these questions. It is normal for candidates to become stuck on a few particular questions from this section, which leaves them with little time to solve questions they can definitely ace. Therefore, candidates should practise enough questions to guarantee they can attempt a desirable quantity of questions within the 40-minute deadline.
Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC)
In general, the CAT exam’s VARC section has the most number of questions. This section includes odd one-outs, paraphrases, parajumbles, and reading comprehension. Developing an effective reading habit is crucial in this situation; one should be skilled at quickly scanning lengthy documents and gaining a grasp of them so that they may respond to enquiries with pertinent context. Usually, the biggest obstacle is to complete all of this within the allotted time. Students often find the paragraph jumbles in this section challenging because they are usually Type In The Answer (TITAs), which can lead to careless errors when time is limited. Again, the best suggestion is to practise consistently.
Quantitative Aptitude (QA)
The questions in this area are mostly focused on math fundamentals taught in primary school; thus, this is the section that most of the students are comfortable with. One could assume that they would be easy to solve at first, but that couldn’t be farther from the reality. With a lengthy, vague curriculum, this section is often regarded as one of the most dreaded test portions. Typically, this part includes extremely difficult yet deceptively straightforward questions. If one is not practising regularly and reviewing their knowledge daily, these questions, which must be answered in a minimum of 40 minutes, might be excruciating. The ideas on which these are based may be straightforward, but the complexity of the questions in the paper cannot be addressed without a thorough understanding of previous years’ paper patterns. Attempting multiple practice exams will help you succeed in the main paper by ensuring that you solve the questions correctly and maintain a good attempt-to-accuracy ratio.
So, the above CAT section-wise difficulty analysis proves why is CAT exam tough.
Can an Average Student Crack CAT?
Yes, an average student can crack CAT but only with smart preparation. Below are the techniques that can help in giving the positive answer to the question i.e., “is CAT exam tough?”
Getting Ready for the CAT Exam 2025 VARC Section
There will be 24 VARC questions in the CAT 2025 test — 16 on Reading Comprehension (RC) and 8 on Verbal Ability (VA). The section is expected to include a mix of MCQs (around 20–22) and TITA questions (around 2–4). Reading Comprehension will feature four passages, each followed by four questions.
The Verbal Ability part will include topics such as para-jumbles, para-summaries, and sentence correction. Strong English communication skills, particularly vocabulary and grammar, are essential to perform well in this section.
Tips to prepare well for the CAT VARC section
- Recognise the underlying meaning: To score high in this section, you must read each reading comprehension paragraph quickly and carefully. Instead, practise reading each part of the para quickly and figuring out its main ideas.
- Develop your grammar and vocabulary: It can be done by reading more frequently, whether it be a newspaper, magazine, or novel. You can increase your reading speed and vocabulary as a consequence.
- Pick the right reading material: Pick reading that will help you grasp the fundamentals of the verbal abilities part. Grammar and verbal reasoning sections in VA, along with thorough explanations for each question, should be included in your content.
- Practice a minimum of four to five reading comprehension questions: Candidates ought to practice four to five reading comprehension problems every day. It will boost your confidence throughout the main CAT exam and help you comprehend the area better.
Getting Ready for the CAT 2025 DILR Section
The biggest adjustments were made to the DILR section last year. There were 22 questions instead of 20. Additionally, there were three sets of four questions and two sets of five questions rather than five sets of four questions each. Despite its apparent simplicity, DILR calls for quick thinking, quickness, and some mathematical knowledge.
As part of their CAT preparation plan, we advise students to ideally practise one DILR set each day. Linear and matrix arrangements, family trees, family connections, coding-decoding, directions, sequences and series, analogies, and syllogisms are all covered in the DILR part.
Tips to prepare well for the CAT DILR section
- Practice mock exams: To evaluate your accuracy and speed, practice mock exams on a regular basis. In addition to one DILR set every day, try one topic’s mock exam at least once every week. Make sure each day’s settings are unique. Additionally, when evaluating your effort, consider the reasons why your strategy was ineffective or time-consuming. You have only 40 minutes to try 22 questions; therefore, speed is essential.
- Pay attention to the words: When figuring out the facts for a given section, terms like ‘none’, ‘some’, ‘all’, ‘only’, ‘other than’, and ‘unless’ are crucial. Additionally, take into account negative prefixes such as dis-, un-, and non-.
- Don’t try to finish the whole section: Keep in mind that your objective is not to tackle the entire DILR section. If you only try two sets, you will reach the 90th percentile. Within the allotted time, concentrate on completing two sets accurately. You can try doing extra sets if you feel at ease with this speed.
- Create a DILR strategy: A lot relies on the sets you choose. Gain proficiency in identifying the sets’ varying degrees of difficulty and include questions to help you decide which ones to try. The CAT DILR part typically consists of at least two easy sets. You must know when to stop asking questions and when to go on to the next set.
Getting Ready for the CAT 2025 QA Section
The QA part typically receives the lowest cutoff score while being billed as the most difficult. And with good cause!
Despite just requiring simple maths, the CAT QA portion includes questions that assess students’ critical comprehension and application of fundamental theoretical ideas. Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, number systems, and modern maths make up the majority of the five sections that make up the QA syllabus. You should be able to cover the entire syllabus if you begin your CAT preparation early.
Tips to prepare well for the CAT QA section
- Practising questions: Practice the questions by going over the NCERT textbooks for grades 10 through 12. Once you understand the fundamentals, this will improve your readiness.
- Mock exams are your ultimate goal: Try as many sectional QA mocks as you are able to. Adding hundreds of QA practice questions is a must for every CAT preparation plan. Examine each mock to see why your strategy failed. Even if you know the answers, the solutions that come with each question will frequently show you a quicker, more effective method that is more suited to the hectic CAT setting.
- Start your QA preparation right away: Never assume you already know something. Even if CAT Mathematics appears simpler than what you studied in school or college, it can still be tricky. The CAT exam is designed to test your clarity of thought and ability to avoid confusion, not just your knowledge of formulas. Accuracy comes from thoroughly understanding the terminology and logic behind quantitative questions. Begin your QA preparation as early as possible, ideally by revising the foundational math concepts from Class 10.
- Improve shortcuts: Shortcuts might not be very important for people who are just trying to get through this part. However, if you want to save time and maximise your efforts, you should learn and commit to memory shortcuts to finish the final answer. You can compute and navigate between questions more rapidly by doing this. Using shortcuts will guarantee accuracy in the least amount of time.
- Track the time: As you practise questions, record how long it takes to answer them and try to cut down on that time. Time may be saved by increasing practice and using quick techniques and procedures. This will also assist you in determining which queries take up the most time. You should avoid answering such questions in the test.
Is CAT exam tough? Not really, if the aspirants use the above-mentioned techniques.
CAT Success Rate
The data given below showcase the CAT success rate:
- Only 1–2% reach the 99+ percentile.
- Many top-ranked B-schools accept the 70–90 percentile.
- You don’t need 100% accuracy to score well.

Is CAT Exam Tough? Complete Difficulty Analysis & Study Plan
Blog Content
