What After the NEET UG Result?

The immediate step after the declaration of the NEET UG result is participating in the centralised and state-level medical counselling processes to secure admission into medical colleges.

The score and All India Rank (AIR) will dictate whether aspirants qualify for top-tier clinical seats, alternative medical paths or if they should plan for a repeat attempt.

Phase 1: The Counselling Process

Aspirants  must track and register on specific portals based on the seats they are targeting:

All India Quota (AIQ) Counselling (15% Seats)

Conducted online by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC). This includes all seats in AIIMS, JIPMER, central universities, and deemed universities.

State Quota Counselling (85% Seats)

Managed individually by your respective state counselling authorities for government and private medical colleges within your home state.

Steps Involved

Aspirants will register, pay a counselling fee, fill and “lock” their college preferences, check seat allotment results across multiple rounds, and report to the allotted college for document verification.

Phase 2: Mandatory Documents to Prepare

Keep original copies and multiple sets of photocopies ready for reporting:

  • NEET UG Scorecard and Admit Card
  • Class 10th & 12th Marksheets and Passing Certificates
  • Government ID Proof (Aadhaar Card, Passport, etc.)
  • Domicile Certificate (crucial for State Quota)
  • Category / Caste Certificate (if applicable for reservations)
  • Passport-sized photographs (matching the ones on your NEET application)

Phase 3: Evaluating Your Course Options

Depending on your score and cut-off safety margins, you can target several medical disciplines:

Course Full Form Average Duration
MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery 5.5 Years
BDS Bachelor of Dental Surgery 5 Years
BAMS Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery 5.5 Years
BHMS Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery 5.5 Years
BVSc & AH Bachelor of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry 5.5 Years
B.Sc Nursing / BPT Bachelor of Nursing / Physiotherapy 4 – 4.5 Years

If the rank does not align with the target college or course, the students can consider the option of appearing again for the exam. Alternatively, they can consider the option of joining private higher educational institutions such as K.R. Mangalam University, which accept lower cutoff ranks.
